Summerlong by Peter S. Beagle

Summerlong (2016) by Peter S. Beagle is an interesting book that doesn't fit squarely into any one genre. It has a little bit of mystery, a little suspense, some touches of magic and the supernatural, and lots of personality and relationship drama, both family and romantic.

All of the main characters, both 'normal' and mysterious, were very well fleshed out and interesting. I liked them all. The element of mystery in the book was not your typical whodunit, but more of an exploration of the idea of the unknown and the unknowable. And the bit of fantasy was in the form of unusual occurrences and mysterious power; no wizards, dragons, or fairies here. But at its heart, the book was still about the regular people and their relationships with each other. Sometimes it takes a true outsider to bring perspective when people have gotten into a rut, and spark something new. Not necessarily better or worse, but different.

Well worth a read. And if you've never read Peter S. Beagle's most famous book -- The Last Unicorn (1968) -- definitely give it a shot.

Keep reading! Beth
